News Flash: Full program and rules for 2010 Cross Country season are available >> From Here

What is it

Cross country gives athletes an opportunity to run a distance race over different terrain and courses each week. Most events include creeks, mud and hills!

Who is it for

Athletes from the under 6 to under 17s may take part in Cross Country events. Note that championship events are only open to athletes in the under 9 to under 17 age groups, but fun events are still held for the under 6 to under 8's. All cross country events also include events for mums and dads, as well
as an open event.

To qualify for the cross country championships, athletes must compete in at
least four cross country meets during the regular season.

Parents Responsibilities

After the hectic summer season, this is the chance for parents to take it easy! All you need to do is drive your children to the events and watch! You can also participate in the parents and open events on the day.

How it works

Races are held for each age group during the day. Distances vary depending on age groups. All groups have a 'short' run for the first half of the season and a longer run for the second half.

Courses are varied, so families are advised to arrive early and walk the course to familiarise athletes. There are marshals located around the course to keep athletes on the right track.

Parents are advised that coaching athletes during their events is against the rules, as it pacing from the outside of the track. These indiscretions can lead to athletes being disqualified.

Due to the sometimes wet conditions (and creek crossings) it is strongly advised that you bring a change of clothes for your children to cross country events.

Most host centres usually provide good catering, so come along for a day of family fun and fitness.

As there are an increased number of events being held in the southern suburbs this year, why not come along and give Cross Country a go.
