Events & Program>> IGA State Relay Championships

What is it

The State Relay Championships is a championship event open to teams from Little Athletics centres from all over SA. As a championship event, the top three placed teams in each event for each age group receive medals. The State Relay championships provide the only opportunity on the Little Athletics calendar for our children to compete as a part of a team.

Who is it for

The Championship events are only held for the Under 9 to Under 17 age groups. All athletes in these age groups will have received a nomination form when they registered. Teams will be selected based on nominations. We will endeavour to make sure that all athletes who nominate will have an opportunity to compete.

Athletes in the under 6 to under 8 age groups may compete in fun events held on the day. There are also events held for mums and dads!

See Relay Team Selection Guidelines for how we determine the teams.

Parent Responsibilities

Our centre will be allocated a number of duties to perform during the day based on the number of teams we nominate. Parents of children competing will be expected to perform these duties. In most cases, you will only be required to assist for an hour or two.

How it works

Two track and one field relay are offered in each age group. We can enter one team of four athletes in each track event, and one field team (of 2-4 athletes) for each age group.

The track events are run with heats and finals, with the fastest eight teams from the heats progressing to the finals. Medals are presented to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd team in the finals.

The field relays consist of four events - the long jump, high jump, shot put and discus. One athlete from each team competes in each event. Points are awarded based on an athletes position in the event. The team with the most points after the four events wins the relay.
